Candy Cane Cookies

Recipe

It's all in the images above, but here's a transcription (modified slightly) if you can't read it:

1 cup powdered sugar

1/2 cup butter, softened

1/2 cup shortening

1 1/2 tsp peppermint extract

1 tsp vanilla

1 egg

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 tsp red food coloring

1/2 cup crushed peppermint candy

1/2 cup granulated sugar

Preheat oven to 375

Mix powdered sugar, butter, shortening, peppermint, vanilla, and egg in large bowl.

Stir in flour.

Divide dough in half, and color one half with the red food coloring

For each candy cane, shape one teaspoon of dough from each color dough into a four-inch rope by rolling back and forth on a lightly-floured surface. Place one red and one white rope side-by-side, press together, and twist.

Place on ungreased cookie sheet. (Though you may want parchment paper so the candy and sugar doesn't get stuck on the pan)

Curve top of cookie dough down to form hook of cane.

Mix crushed candy and sugar together.

Bake 9 minutes or until very lightly brown.

Immediately sprinkle crushed candy & sugar over the hot cookies.

Remove from cookie sheet.

Makes about four dozen.

Alternate versions:

Use almond extract instead of or in addition to peppermint

To make Valentine cookies, mix peppermint candy pieces into cookie dough and shape dough into heart-shaped cookies. Grease cookie sheet because the candy will stick to the pan when baked.

My Notes

These look really cute and are great if you love peppermint and have extra peppermint candy

They can be fragile, so be careful how you transport them.

Story

I'm not sure where this recipe came from! I've made it a few times and it's always gone pretty well. Even if people don't like peppermint they still usually think the cookies are cute!
